Unconference

A final day of community access NIME activities including workshops, panel sessions and a concert; will be held at a Brisbane maker space called The EdgeStanley Place, Cultural Centre, Southbank, Brisbane (view map) on Friday 15 July 2016. The Edge is a short walk along the river from the main conference venue.

1. DIY CONTROLLER WORKSHOP – part 1 and part 2 (registration link)

The workshop will introduce you to the basics of working with the microcontroller Arduino, working with different types of sensors, and interacting with different types of music software.

At the end of the workshop you’ll walk away with your own built Music Controller, which you can continue to transform and incorporate into your own inventions.

The Retro Controller includes:

  • 1 x Arduino Nano
  • 1 x Arcade Joystick
  • 2 x Arcade Buttons
  • 2 x knobs
  • 1 x Light Sensor
  • 4 x RGB LEDs
  • 1 x Wooden box or similar for the assembling of the instrument.

This is a 3 hour workshop but if you come to the morning session you are welcome to stay for afternoon session as well.

Workshop price covers the cost of all the materials and retro controller kit.

2. PAPER CONE AMPLIFICATION (registration link)

The NIME conference has a focus on emerging and sustainable approaches to sound and performance. DJ Sniff (Takuro Mizuta Lippit) presents this workshop focusing on the simple and accessible including the use of paper-based crafts as sound transmitters for vinyl.

3. 3D PRINTING AND ACOUSTICS (registration link)

Music Maker is a free online resource that provides files for 3D printing woodwind and brass mouthpieces and tutorials for using those mouthpieces to learn about acoustics and music. This workshop will explore the use of these tools in curriculum with the aim to bridge the gap between the digital world of fabrication and the real-world materials that make up our daily lives.

4. Sharing innovations in electronic musical instruments (registration link)

This roundtable seminar examines innovative practices in electronic musical instruments and how these can be shared.

DJ Sniff discusses his work as a turntablist which has taken inspiration from various artists such as Martin Arnold, Grandmaster Flash, and Michel Waisvisz, and outlines his recent research on building new personalised instruments and tools for turntable performances.

As Co-Director of Ensembles Asia / Asian Music Network, which aims to build a new network of independent musicians throughout Asia, he discusses how an annual Asian Meeting Festival brings these musicians together and how collaborative free improvisation plays an essential role in helping them find their edge in a highly competitive environment.

5. Performing with USB controllers (registration link)

Tim Opie provides a demonstration and workshop on the use of standard USB game controllers as interfaces for sound performance.

6. The Sonic Manipulator (registration link)

Claude Woodward (The Sonic Manipulator)  presents a demo / workshop on his approach to designing a MIDI controller for complex articulation of synthesis parameters in live performance.

7. Local Innovators Panel (registration link)

Brisbane-based artists demonstrate alternate approaches to performance and composition. Hardware hacking, DIY modular and post-modern circuit bending.
